I bought this because my kiddo needed to read, "The Bass, The River, and Sheila Mant" for school. He was out sick and didn't have his text book, so I thought I would download it to my kindle for him to stay caught up. When I searched the story title, this book is the only one that came up for the kindle, and that would lead one to believe that story is included in the book. It would be most helpful if the description contained the stories that are included, or don't have it pop up in the search for stories that are NOT in the book. I am very annoyed that I spent money on something that does not have what I need!
The Short Story was our book club selection; none of the members had read it so approved by reviews. My take was that it as not worth finishing as I found it gross at times, and boring at other times . It seemed like the other members of the group agreede
Great book and free
I got this book to read some of the stories Mom read me when i was a child. I enjoyed reading the stories, but it looked to me like about 1/2 the book was for students wanting to write short stories.
There is so much to learn about the way those writers saw a story and wrote them. I liked the stories.
the collection is great. I would suggest reading the bios at the end of the book first. They shed some light on the style and subjects of the authors.
I'm a bit surprised no one has commented on how terribly this book has been produced! I'm guessing the Project Gutenberg version was hijacked, minimally edited, and printed. All the effort and care and attention that went into formatting the Gutenberg is lost, and what we have here is a real mess. Stories and story titles run together, text formatting is bizarre, there is no table of contents, it's simply a jumble. I imagine if Mr Atkinson were still alive this reprint of his book would embarrass him to death. Do yourself a favor Have a look at the Look Inside before you buy and see if you can make head or tail of what you're seeing.
